2019 Audi e-tron: First Battery - Electric Vehicle to Win IIHS

audi e-tron, Audi Richmobnd

The 2019 Audi e-tron has recently become the first battery-electric vehicle to win a top safety rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This is an achievement that Tesla and other electric models such as the Chevy Bolt haven’t been able to attain.

Scoring an IIHS top safety award is difficult. A vehicle has to achieve excellent ratings in six crashworthiness evaluations, an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention, and a good headlight rating.

IIHS states that the Audi e-tron fulfills the criteria to earn a top safety rating with standard equipment. The electric vehicle performed well in crashworthiness testing which lets the vehicle achieve good rating in the following tests:

  • Driver-side small overlap front
  • Passenger-side small overlap front
  • Moderate overlap front, side
  • Roof strength
  • Head restraint tests

Audi e-tron’s standard front crash prevention system rated superior in IIHS track tests. The electric SUV avoided a collision in the 25 mph test and minimized its impact speed by an average of 11 mph in the 12 mph test. Its forward collision warning component meets the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration criteria.
